The honest truth

A friend asked me the other day how the whole "no TV" resolution was going. I realized that it's only fair that you know that we have modified the goal a bit. I don't want anyone thinking we're better than we are...no one likes to be duped. So, here's what we've settled into:

We don't watch TV at night, Kev and I. We watched the final 2 college football bowl games and called it quits. We did watch the end of a Jazz game the other night, and I'm sure we'll catch a few more this season. But we aren't watching any of the shows we used to. It's been a nice change. Kevin is a financial planner and is working toward getting his CFP, so he's using the extra time to study for that. I now have time in the evenings to blog, as quiet moments during the day are becoming increasingly rare.

Kid shows are still part of our life, especially when I have a sick child or two...or three. But we don't watch as much. One or two shows a day for now, and we'll see how that changes once everyone is healthy again. I'm not too hard on myself right now. After 2 weeks of sickness, you just do what you have to do to keep smiling. I had lofty goals of our own little preschool and more book reading. I haven't given up, just give me a little more time. Reading with 4 cranky kids who all want the book right in front of them isn't as ideal as I had envisioned. One on one, or even two on one reading is wonderful, and I look forward to more of that as the boys get healthy and less needy.

I don't watch TV at all during the day and I don't miss it. I have stopped watching Judge Judy. I know, I know. You don't even need to say it. I know. But I've stopped now so you don't need to be worried about me. But let me tell you, if I ever go to small claims court, I'll be a force to be reckoned with after all the knowledge I've gained from that little woman. The other day when I was turning on a recorded kid's show for Jack, I noticed we had 2 American Idols recorded. "Oh, Kevin..." I thought he'd buckled and was saving them for when we finally caved. Honestly, I sortof got my hopes up that this was the case. It turned out we just hadn't modified our DVR recordings since last season, and Kev deleted them as soon as I mentioned it. Good for him, staying strong like that. I think we really are sticking to it and I'm glad.

So that's it. My honest account of all my dealings with television.

Because as the wise Judge Judith Sheindlin often says: "If you tell the truth, you don't have to have a good memory."

So true, Judy. So true.

  1. Judge Judy? Seriously? hahahahahahahahaha I would have never guessed! (PS I could totally hear you saying "I know!")

Thanks for the truth about your tv resolution. As Dean always says, "Nobody likes an over-achiever." ;)

Lets have a little playdate as soon as the buggies are all gone!

  2. I think this is a great compromise.
Perhaps you needed to get rid of it completely at first, and then add some back like you have, to come to a good balance. As your boys get older and have more to do...reading on their own, playing board games, building things, etc they will need the TV less. Did I just write that...'need the TV less?' well, you know what I mean :)

  4. Hahah! I love that if you tell the truth you don't have to have a good memory! Ha. I wish I could use that on my clients!

The TV thing is hard. We watch netflix and I guess we watch less mindless tv and more classic movies, because we have been trying to get through all of the classics. I don't know if we are watching less TV...but we are trying...and that is something, right?

I hope the boys are feeling better!
