Not so Jolly

I haven't ever really sat my kids down and told them about Santa. I don't mean the truth, I mean ANYTHING about him. I didn't think it was really necessary. I just assumed they'd glean whatever knowledge they needed to from the hype and books and television. We haven't done Santa pictures with the boys. I'm not against them, we just haven't done it. I've said things like "Santa is going to put candy in those," when they asked about their stockings, or "Santa Claus is going to bring you presents!" But I sort of assumed that they would remember last year...see the Backyardigans Christmas special and know that Santa is a nice, jolly old man who is kind to children.

So you can imagine my confusion when Taylor always seemed troubled when Santa was mentioned. Not just confused, but bothered. He kept saying things like "is Santa Fwas so big and scawy?" No, I assured him, Santa is not big or scary. He's about dad's size and he's very nice. But he's been saying that for almost a week and no matter what I've said he has NOT been excited about Santa Claus coming to town.

So today when we were sitting on the couch and Taylor asked me again if Santa was big and scary, I again reassured him that his unease was unfounded. He then asked"Does he tarry tids in his pockets?" What? No, he doesn't carry kids in his pockets. Where is he getting this stuff? Then I noticed his concerned eyes were fixed on the picture above our TV: Sad! With no girls in the house, Taylor didn't know a doll when he saw one. He DOES look big and scary when you look at it that way. But not as scary as the way Jack had been viewing the picture. Intrigued by Taylors interpretation of the painting, I asked Jack as he passed by what Santa had in his pocket. I was fairly certain he had a firmer grasp on reality and would assure Taylor that it was, indeed, a doll. Nothing to worry about. He glanced up and said "a girl...and a hand." Holy cow! Time for Santa Claus 101, I guess. I wouldn't be looking forward to a visit from this huge twisted man either! Point number 1: Santa Claus is NOT a cannibal...

And speaking of creepy hands, doesn't it look a bit like Austin's hand is mine in this picture?
It reminded me of this hilarious little video:
(sorry about the little commercial, but if you haven't seen this, it's worth the wait)

If it's not showing up for you, here's a link.

  1. hahahaha It is a creepy little hand...

I haven't "taught" Leah about Santa either. Whenever people ask her what she wants from Santa, she just gives them a blank stare. I too assume she will pick it up without me sitting her down and explaining how it all works. No use getting her hyped up about presents, you know? Note to self- do not hang creepy Santa pictures in the house. hahaha

  3. Makes me wonder what else our kids are thinking that isn't quite right. Everything is so literal to them. I was taking care of my 7 year old granddaughter a few weeks ago while her mom was at a baby shower. I asked my gd about the mom at the shower and she said, "She is so happy because she just had a baby. She had one before that but she lost it. I don't know how she could lose a baby but she did." I guess she thought the mom just put the baby somewhere but forgot where.

    Taylor's so cute!!

  4. That is too funny! I seriously was laughing out loud, which I really don't do too often while reading something--so you totally win points there! And yes that picture of Austin's hand is a little creepy. :)
