I'm posting about a dishwasher? really?

As I stated before, our dishwasher gave out on us this past weekend.  Before it died a sudden, electrical death, it was a champ.  It wasn't the most stylish thing, but it did clean dishes well, which is all I really want from a dishwasher.

When we moved into this house, a refrigerator was not included.  We found a stainless steel one on KSL (our local classifieds) for $300 and have really liked it.  We also found a non-working stainless steel microwave for free and had it repaired but it still doesn't work.  We have two microwaves in our kitchen now...the pretty one above the stove and the ugly useful one on the counter.  This is frustrating for me.  I'd rather have one ugly, reliable one above the stove.   We've stopped talking about the microwave issue.  I don't want to put more money into the pretty one, Kevin's goal is to bring unity to our kitchen by way of eventually getting stainless everything so he doesn't want to give up on it.  My goal is to have appliances that work as they should and that I have counter space.

So, as we searched out a dishwasher in our price range, we found ourselves at this familiar impasse.  I found one for $150.  It was white but it received great online reviews. It was being sold by someone who shared (and was realizing) Kevin's dream of an all stainless kitchen.  Then there was a stainless one for $200.  There were very few reviews about it online and most were negative.  Kevin still wanted it, and it was a reputable brand, so I finally just said he could buy it.  He called the woman and she didn't pick up.  Hoping to use this to my advantage, I kept searching KSL.  Then a new add popped up for a "miele inspira brand new, add your own custom cabinet" dishwasher for $175. I'd never heard of this brand, but  a few moments on the internet proved this was a great deal.  Kevin was quickly sold on the idea and called right away.

So, now, after a long evening/night/early morning installation, (we're a great team, Kevin and I) this beauty sits in our kitchen.

Okay, I know it's ugly, but it is metal, so I guess we both win...sort of?  We really do though, because as with so many things in this life, it's what's inside that counts.
And inside this particular ugly duck is a stainless steel interior, a cutlery rack, and a cleaning system that took off dried on egg and malt o' meal.  Needless to say, I'm in love.

Now...any suggestions on how to make it look pretty outside too?

  1. Yay for a new dishwasher. When Sean and I first started dating he wouldn't put anything in the dishwasher and now we use one and life is wonderful...minus all of our dishes that have to be washed by hand because they are from the 1950's.

How about painting it with the chalkboard paint?? Although that negates the stainless steel look. I am not very good with decorating.

  2. No need for pretty on the outside. That cutlery rack totally makes up for it!

  4. I'm so glad you got a dishwasher that works. That's huge for me. Oh, and I just checked your blog and you updated it less than a half an hour ago. This may sound goofy, but I got so excited thinking we were almost on the computer at the same time, which makes us not so far apart, right? It's almost like we hung out today... Anyway, I think you deserve a good strong working dishwasher.

  5. yay for a working appliance!!!! you got one that you are supposed to screw a cabinet door to, so it "disappears" in the kitchen. have a cabinet and extra drawer front that is the same size that you'd rather not have a door on?? or could you maybe find something to match your doors at ikea? and the stainless on the inside is what really counts anyway! my dishwasher no longer smells like something died in it now that we got a stainless tub one (ours is plain black on the outside) I love the silverware drawer on the top too. yay you!!!

  9. That dishwasher looks like a dream come true. That inside is amazing. I think you could spray paint the outside- ask the Home Depot guys what the best way to paint the metal. Good Luck!
So when are we getting together?

  10. That cutlery rack is awesome. And I totally understand both yours AND Kevin's side of the appliance issue. I'm all about unity. But also all about funtionality. AND all about saving money. Needless to say it's hard to be me sometimes. =)

By the way you are brave with that Black Widow. I hate big bugs and totally have nightmares whenever I find one in the house. Why hasn't Kevin killed it for you? And I got a laugh out of the germ sign.
